A trucker's believed to have lost control of the vehicle on the M41 eastbound.

The truck rammed into more than 30 vehicles stationary near the M4 on ramp, causing absolute chaos on the M41.

The wreckage of vehicles can be seen stretching across some 400 metres along the busy route.

Some have overturned, or smashed into the barrier while others were mangled almost beyond recognition.

Witnesses told Newswatch that the truck ploughed into traffic that had come to a standstill.

The vehicle then rolled into a conservation site at Umhlanga Ridge before falling onto its side.

Fifteen people, including a pregnant woman, were taken to hospital.

One man who was involved in the pile-up said he is thankful to be alive.

"All cars were standing still because of the traffic jam and all of a sudden, I heard a big bang then all the cars that were behind me were pushing each other.

Durban metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu said it's going to take a while to clear the road.

"At this stage, it is very difficult to day when we are going to open it because it is going to take time. We are advising motorists to use other routes until further notice."
