The number of dead has not yet been disclosed but they say several people have also been wounded.

The train station explosion was followed by twin-blasts in the departures hall of Brussels' Zaventem Airport.

Police have confirmed at least 13 people have been killed in the airport explosion and more than 30 wounded.

The suspected terror attack is said to have happened near an American Airlines desk.

It's also reported that shots were fired before the blasts, airport officials were kept busy as they evacuated passengers and workers.

"There are several exits - go to them. All the luggage stays here! All the luggage stays here!," an official said.

Hans Klose from Germany was waiting for his suitcase at the airport when he heard an evacuation announcement.

"I walked through a mess - glass splinter, smoke, water dripping from the ceiling. We had to walk through puddles - we were evacuated," he said.

The Netherlands, France particularly in Paris and London's Gatwick airport have stepped up security at national airports and train stations.

UPDATE: At least 35 people are now believed to have been killed in the blast.
