Latest: Protesting Vryheid miners abandon underground sit-in
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana, Steve Bhengu
Management at a mine in Vryheid where about 40 miners have been protesting underground, has confirmed that the workers have left the facility.
Since Monday, more than 70 workers had refused to surface from a shaft because they say they have not been paid their salaries.
They say issues of payment go as far back as 2009 when they were fully employed by Keaton Mining Holdings and were shortly moved to Nasonti Mining, a contractor that's now been liquidated.
Mandy Glad is CEO at Keaton Mining Holdings.
"Our underground mining contractor, a company by the name Nasonti Mining, who put themselves into voluntary liquidation and as a result have not paid their staff in full," she said.
"From Keaton's perspective we have paid Nasonti for all services rendered to us. So I cannot tell you if there was mismanagement on the side of Nasonti. I cannot comment on that." Glad said.
