Latest bout of load shedding crippling businesses: Durban Chamber

Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry has warned Eskom that the last bout of power cuts will only serve to further cripple businesses in KwaZulu-Natal.

The country will experience stage 4 load shedding until Friday.

The chamber's Gladwin Mashile has called for closer consultation between Eskom, government and the private sector before load shedding is implemented.

"We are calling for businesses to be consulted to that they could plan much better because the machines they are using in their manufacturing plants need more time to be prepared before the load shedding come.

"So it is important for everyone to be consulted so that we can preserve jobs and to create a platform where we can actually invite more investors, because if we consult much better, investors will see that the businesses are taken seriously in this country."

Meanwhile, the Black Business Council says it is unsustainable for South Africa's growth to have an unpredictable power supply.

The council says the inability to stabilise Eskom will only lead to the country being downgraded by international ratings agencies.

It has also called for Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter to resign.

The council has called for an urgent meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa and Public Enterprise Minister Pravin Gordhon over the prolonged electricity blackouts.
