Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Five of the province's most wanted suspects have been killed in a gun battle with police in the Midlands.
The Hawks say one policeman was hurt in the shootout near Estcourt yesterday.
The Hawks, K9 unit and officers from a task force responded after an armed robbery at a supermarket.
KZN Hawks Spokesperson Siyabonga Mhlongo says officers recovered eight firearms following the shooting.
"Two rifles, one AK47, one R5 as well four 9mm pistols were recovered from the suspects. They were the most dangerous and wanted suspects in the province.
"We believe some are still at large but the ones that were in the taxi [were arrested] because the airtime and cigarettes they had robbed from the supermarket was also recovered in their getaway vehicle," he said.
