The KZN police's Robert Netshuinda says the 29-year-old claimed to have been on her way to visit her boyfriend at his home in Dududu when they were blocked by another car.

She told police the incident happened along the Khakhama main road on Friday evening.

"The woman further claimed that the two suspects instructed her to get of the car and instructed the driver to drive away.

“She continued to plot her story and told the police that the suspects escorted her to the nearby bushes where they instructed her to call the father of the child and demanded R5000 which he owed the suspects. She also claimed that the suspects struck her with the butt of a firearm before fleeing with her baby.

"Police investigations revealed that the woman was lying about having a baby and had staged the imaginary kidnapping."

The woman has been remanded in custody until next week after appearing in the Sawoti Magistrate's Court on Monday.
