Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
A nine-year-old boy from Nquthu in northern KwaZulu-Natal has been moved to a place of safety, after a video emerged showing the child being tied to a pole and brutally assaulted.
Local government officials say the boy was beaten by his neighbour after she accused him of stealing her cellphone and money.
In the video which was posted on social networks, a woman can be seen carrying a firearm.
She then assaults the child with a sjambok, a stick and strangles him.
Social Development MEC Mrs Weziwe Thusi has expressed disgust and horror at the video.
Spokesperson Ncumisa Fandesi says the boy is receiving psychological help.
"Fortunately, the boy's foster mother reacted quickly and called the police. The woman was arrested and our social workers removed the boy to a place of safety," she said.
