KZN varsities to receive funding for student residences, infrastructure
Updated | By Portia Cele
Institutions that show a greater need for financial support will receive funds accordingly.
Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande yesterday announced the department has allocated over R500-million to 24 government-owned universities countrywide.
This will meet the need for improving university infrastructure such as building additional lecture rooms and student housing.
In KZN - DUT, UKZN, Mangosuthu University of Technology and the University of Zululand have made the cut.
The department's Khaye Nkwanyana says allocations were based on merit.
"For instance, the university of Zululand has more needs that UKZN which is an historically advantaged institution with modern infrastructure. So for uniZulu, a lot of money has to be invested.
"We had to carry out assessments and institutions have had to submit plans to us as to what they want to do. On that basis, we did allocations," he said.
