KZN unions want vacancies filled at understaffed healthcare facilities
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Health workers' unions in KwaZulu-Natal are demanding action to address the challenge of understaffing at public healthcare facilities.
More than 100 unemployed doctors called off their protest in Pietermaritzburg this week, after the department agreed to make good on its promise to provide them with job opportunities.
Management hopes to wrap up the recruitment process next month.
The National, Education, Health and Allied Workers Union’s Ayanda Zulu says while they welcome the move, more changes are needed.

"The provincial health system is severely understaffed, which adds to the strain on the system. The Department of Health in KwaZulu-Natal must fill all the vacant posts from medical officers to nurses and all those who are providing clinical and non-clinical services."
Mlungisi Ndlovu is with the Public Servants Association.
"They must make sure that they appoint a competent team so that they will start with screening the applications as quickly as possible."
