KZN transport dept highlights road safety on World Remembrance Day

Transport officials have gathered on Field's Hill in Pinetown, west of Durban, to commemorate the United Nations World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
Representatives from the Road Traffic Inspectorate, Road Accident Fund, and the provincial transport department - led by MEC Mxolisi Kaunda - will be laying a wreath at the site of a fatal crash in the area in 2013, later today.
24 people were killed in the incident - when a speeding truck ploughed into four vehicles.
The driver, Sanele May, is currently serving an eight year sentence for culpable homicide, while the case against the owner of the truck company, Gregory Govender, is ongoing

Earlier today, as part of the day's road safety initiative, officials conducted roadblocks at Field's Hill - to determine whether or not motorists were obeying the rules of the road.
RAF CEO Eugene Watson says during this morning's roadblock, motorists were fined for numerous transgressions - including unroadworthy vehicles, and toddlers without car seats.
"The focus from our perspective today is to remember the victims of crashes, to support the injured who are rendered disabled as a result of these accidents, and to promote road safety as much as possible using the different legs of road safety - enforcement, education, evaluation - to ensure that we save people's lives," he said.
