KZN tops number of house break-ins in South Africa
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
There were approximately 1.4 million house break-ins in South Africa in the past financial year.
Stats SA says over 980 000 households were affected, representing 5.4% of all households in the country.
Statistician-general Risenga Maluleke says the highest proportion of affected households were in KwaZulu-Natal.
He released the results of the Victims of Crime Report from the latest Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey on Tuesday.
"We can see that when you look at KwaZulu-Natal sitting at 255 000 with a share of 7.9% In the North West 7.8%,” Maluleke said.
“When you look at absolute numbers and then you look at the proportion within the province then you start seeing those movements. These proportions are looking at the population within the provinces."
Maluleke said nearly 60 % of households that experienced housebreaking reported some or all incidences to the police.
The survey has also revealed that about 205 000 homes were robbed during the same period.
"The second most common type of crime experienced by households is home robbery, affecting 155 000 households. Assault is the third most common type of crime, affecting 99 000 households.
"Data shows that the experience of crime by households has increased for housebreaking, home robbery, assault and murder. The experience of theft of motor vehicles by households declined from 81 000 in 2020/21 to 42 000 in 2021/22," Stats SA added in a statement.
