KZN teachers to picket over vacancies
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
KwaZulu-Natal teachers, who are angry over unfilled vacancies, are taking their protest to the doorstep of the Education Department.
The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) says its members will picket outside offices across the province on Tuesday.
It says Grade R and temporary teachers are still not being paid.
Training isn't being provided either.
Sadtu's Nomarashiya Caluza says they have had a myriad of challenges to deal ith since January.
“Many schools still don’t have teachers. Even the teachers who were appointed have not been paid. And there are still more than 2000 vacancies in the department, especially in our schools, which means since the reopening of schools there has been no effective teaching.
“Whenever we engage the Department of Education they will blame the budget cuts, which is why we have taken a decision to direct the memorandum to the premier.”
A memorandum will be handed over to officials at the offices of the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg where the main picket will take place.
