KZN Storms: Girl (6) killed by lightning, 10 others dead

KZN officials say they're trying to assist as many families as possible who were affected by a storm earlier this week.

A six-year-old girl died in a village in Maphumulo Local Municipality. 


She was struck by lightning in her home. 


Cogta says 11 people have lost their lives since heavy storms lashed the province a month ago.


Two people who have swept away from the uThukela Bridge between Kranskop and Nkandla are still missing. 


Spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila says the MEC will continue to visit the affected areas. "Two people are still missing, search and rescue teams have deployed a helicopter to assist with the search for Smakade Magwaza and his grandson Lwandle Magwaza, 8-year-old." 



He says the MEC continues to invest in an additional management capacity in municipalities so they can better respond to natural disasters and weather-related incidents.

Meanwhile, many motorists have been forced to reconsider their route to school and work in eThekwini this morning. 


The heavy rains that pounded Durban last night, have left some major routes underwater. 


Durban Metro Police are advising drivers and pedestrians to take extra precaution. 


Spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad says JG Champion Drive near Sunford in Phoenix and the M4 Southern Freeway - heading towards Durban before Quality Street - are affected. 


"Bluff Road next to Medina meats is flooded, roads are closed in Prince Umhlangane Road in RiverHorse Valley due to flooding,  M7 opposite Southway Mall, Brighton Road Bluff as well as the M4 Highway"
