KZN storm: Stranded residents were assisted, says Cogta

Local government authorities have dismissed claims by the DA that families in Cato Manor left homeless by Friday's storm have not received assistance.

DA eThekwini mayoral candidate Haniff Hoosen says over 12 families in Bonela had their homes destroyed and were left destitute.

He says 24 hours after the storm hit Durban on Friday night, disaster management teams were no where to be found to provide the necessary assistance.

Hoosen says the city needs to review the entire housing system in the area.

"The river running behind the informal settlement of Cato Crest has washed away a number of informal settlements. The saddest thing is that several attempts of the city's disaster management department has yielded absolutely no results whatsoever. They come up with a dozen excuses on why they cannot respond," he said.

But Co-operative Governance spokesperson Lennox Mabaso says disaster management teams were dispatched to Cato Manor.

"I think they need to retract that statement. You will see that the officers that were on site were officers from the provincial government," he said.
