KZN storm death toll hits 32

KwaZulu-Natal Disaster Management says the death toll from heavy rains and thunderstorms that have battered the province recently has risen to 32.

Officials says three people are still unaccounted.


KZN Cooperative Governance says in the latest incident, a man was stuck by lightning and killed in Eshowe.


The uThukela District was the worst affected with 23 deaths recorded.


It's after heavy rains caused the Bellspruit River to burst it's banks, leading to a flash flood in the Ladysmith Town on Christmas Eve.


Over 100 households were damaged.


Collectively, over 600 households have been affected, with 140 of them being left completely destroyed.


Cogta officials say the Umgungundlovu District suffered with the most homes damaged.


A family of three were also killed after there vehicle was swept away in Pietermaritzburg.


The bodies of a woman and child have been recovered while a man remains missing.


The storms that have hit the province since last week have affected over 2 000 people. 


KZN Cogta says more rains are expected to continue in different areas in the province and have warned residents to be vigilant.
