KZN sees rise in flu cases

KZN has been flagged as one of six provinces that are seeing a rise in flu cases.

That's according to the National Health Department.
The Department says it's been notified by the NICD- that there's been increased circulation of influenza cases in the country since the beginning of May.
It says Flu clusters have also been reported in schools and workplaces.
The Department's spokesperson, Foster Mohale says the 2023 influenza season started in the last week of April when the detection rate breached the seasonal threshold.
"The increase in case numbers has been identified in six provinces which include KZN, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and North West where surveillance is being conducted.
He says the most common symptoms include fever, muscle
and body pain, dry cough, sore throat and runny nose and headache.

"The majority of people with influenza will present with mild illness, influenza may cause severe illness, which may require hospitalisation or cause death, especially in individuals who are at risk of getting severe influenza illness or complications."
