KZN schools become first beneficiaries of rural broadband
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The first phase of the national broadband roll-out has begun, with some schools in the Umgungundlovu District Municipality having had Information and Communication Technologies equipment installed.
The schools are now connected to the internet and have laboratories.
It is part of government's plans to extend broadband infrastructure and services to communities which do not have many resources.
Deputy Minister of Telecommunications Hlengiwe Mkhize says pupils there can now access their curricula online, adding this will benefit them in the long-term.
"If we don't intervene now, by the time they go to universities I don't think in the faculties of engineering they will admit a child who in the questionnaire will say I've never touched a computer because that's a high level scientific application.
"In engineering, the drawings are all technology-based," she said.
