KZN school earns top spot in Nelson Mandela Debating Challenge
Updated | By Lethiwe Mdluli
A KZN school has been crowned the winners of the Nelson Mandela Debating Challenge 2018.
Mountview Secondary School represented the province going up against 50 learners from schools in each of the nine provinces.
The competition saw nine teams going head to head for six days at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg.
Some of the topics included whether popular policies such as land expropriation without compensation and nationalisation of the South Africa’s mines and banks are relevant when alleviating poverty.
Acting Head of Department of Languages at Mountview, Meloshnee Pillay says the school has a very active debating society - where learners are always discussing relevant topics in the country.
Pillay says the win was a phenomenal achievement for the school and an honour for them to represent the province.
As winners, the learners have been invited to a private dinner with a prominent figure who will deliver the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture this year. Previous speakers include Bill Gates, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and former US president Bill Clinton.
