The Department of Education is KZN says the rate of absenteeism has dropped in schools since the introduction of their sanitary pad project.

A report released by UNICEF, last year found that a tenth of African school girls were missing 25% of their education because they did not have access to feminine hygiene products.
The education department has since announced they would be distributing the products to schools across the province.

Spokesperson for the department, Muzi Mahlambi says around half a million girls are benefiting from the programme.
"Girl learners now participate freely as their counterparts, boys and those from families can afford, now the ground has been leveled for all of them to receive and excel equally in terms of their academic capacity," he said.
