KZN SADTU: Catergorise teachers as frontline workers
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
With South Africa in the grips of the coronavirus pandemic - KZN SADTU is calling for educators to be categorised as frontline workers.
Nearly 200 teachers in the province have contracted COVID-19.
The union’s Nomarashiya Caluza says considering the different levels of exposure for teachers, they need to be given the same priority and preference as health workers.
"Teachers are front workers, so is important that they are prioritised," sais Caluza.

"We all know that they are using public transport and the fact that there is no compliance in many public transport, its easy for teachers to get infected."
"Scientists are now saying the virus is airborne and when the decision to re-open was taken, we did not have this evidence," said Caluza.
Earlier this week, SADTU’s National Executive Committee resolved that the government should shut schools immediately and only reopen them once we’re over the COVID-19 peak.
