He's revealed this during talks in Pietermaritzburg with all heads of law enforcement to discuss the plan for the festive season safety campaign.

Ntuli says the majority of people who are killed on the province's roads are pedestrians.

"Some are walking on the roadside of the roads, some walking at night without wearing reflective clothes or clothes that will make them visible."

"That itself is adding more pressure and this time last year, people who have died on our roads were over 2 000. This time around, it's over 1492."

eThekwini Metro Police Head Steve Middleton says police visibility will be increased on the roads, even at the beaches, " Yesterday it looked,50% of the 16th of December. It was from a Covid perspective absolutely horrendous. The biggest concern about the beaches is the curfew."
