KZN residents shocked over increasing crime
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The increase in murders, hijackings and aggravated robberies in last year's crime statistics has shocked the loved ones of some KwaZulu-Natal victims.
National incidents of murder increased by 4.6%.
The annual crime stats were presented to Parliament yesterday.
Julie Graham, whose partner, Gideon van Zyl of Pinetown was shot and killed after surrendering his vehicle to hijackers last year, says she now keeps her dogs inside her home at night.
"I haven't heard a thing about any arrest or anything else from the police in a year since he was shot. It's scary how a human life can just be taken for a car or for belongings. The life can't be returned," she said.
Meanwhile, Thembi Zwane-Mthembu, a primary school teacher from Mondlo in northern KZN says police killings must be stopped.
Zwane-Mthembu was tied up and burned with a hot iron by robbers last July.
"Police are being killed at an alarming rate and these are the people who protect us from criminals. At this rate, they won't come when we call because they'll think they're being called out to be killed," she said.
