A suspect who escaped from the Nyoni Police Station in an incident that claimed the lives of two police officers has been shot dead by members of the SAPS.
Last Thursday night, Warrant Officers Bhekizitha Gumede and Siza Nyandeni were overpowered as they went to check on the detainees in the station's holding cells.
One suspect grabbed one of the officers' weapon and shot both of them. One of the detainees is said to have been shot dead in the charge office while the second fled.
Both Gumede and Nyandeni died later in hospital.
Following a tip-off this morning, police located the escapee to the Mandeni area.
The police's Thulani Zwane says the suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Senzo Dube.
"When police attempted to arrest the suspect, it is alleged that the suspect started to shoot at the members. As a result, he ran away from the members.
"As he was running away, it is alleged that he was firing at the members. They returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect," he said.
