KZN premier calls for investigation into alleged blue light crash
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Authorities are investigating 2 cases of culpable homicide following Friday night’s alleged ‘blue light’ crash on the north coast.
Two people were killed when a double cab bakkie assigned to Premier Senzo Mchunu’s security detail crashed head-on with a car on the N2 between Zinkwazi and KwaDukuza. Three other people who had been travelling in the car were also hurt - 1 of them critically.
Emergency services say the occupants of the bakkie sustained only minor injuries. The driver of a truck reportedly involved in the crash allegedly fled the scene. Mchunu yesterday expressed his shock at the crash.
His spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, issued a statement saying the Premier was at his home at the time of the accident.
He says the Premier’s office is working with law enforcement agencies and police to establish exactly what happened.
"The premier has ordered an investigation to establish what exactly happened because there are so many conflicting reports," he said.
"So he is concerned that there is also a report of a truck that allegedly drove away. These are just some of the reports we have been getting," Sibiya said.
