KZN political parties in support of King Zwelithini statue
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
There's been overall
support from political parties in KZN for the erection of a life-sized statue
of late AmaZulu King Goodwill Zwelithini.
The statue will be erected outside the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg, where a debate on the matter was held on Thursday.
But a number of concerns were also raised.
The DA's Francois Rodgers says they welcome the move to honour the late king's leadership, but believe the ANC will use it to their benefit leading up to elections next year.
"There were continual problems between the king and ANC-led government. The king on various platforms raised the issue about the refurbishment of his palaces."
The EFF's Nkululeko Ngubane cautioned against the process turning into "a looting festival".
"We call for transparency and everything must be in black and white in terms of budget allocation, The awarding of tenders and timeframes for projects. We call for the establishment of a committee to exercise oversight, as well as to ensure that everything is done accordingly."
