KZN policeman gunned down near KwaNdengezi

The National Police Commissioner , Khehla Sithole has condemned the killing of two police officers, one in KwaZulu-Natal and a second in the Eastern Cape. Both incidents occurred yesterday.

In the KwaZulu-Natal murder, detective Bhekisigcino Khwela was shot dead outside his home in KwaNdengezi, near Mariannhill last night.

Police say the 54-year-old Warrant Officer was with a friend and his son outside his home when two gunmen approached on foot.

Spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo says they fired multiple shots, killing Khwela instantly.

Naidoo says Khwela's son was wounded while the friend was unharmed.

"This was the second police killing yesterday, following the death of Captain Lumkile Tyibilika in the Eastern Cape. The motives for both incidents are not conclusive at this stage, but they are part of the investigations" said Naidoo.

"The killing of the two police officers is a reflection of what police must endure on a daily basis."

Both incidents are unrelated.

Meanwhile, a 72 Hour Activation Plan has been implemented in both cases.

Provincial commissioners in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape have been instructed to mobilise maximum resources to track down the suspects and bring them to book.
