KZN police stations record high rate of reported murders

Six KZN police stations are among the 30 highest in the country when it comes to reported murders during the last financial year.

Inanda SAPS recorded the second most reported murders in South Africa behind Nyanga in the Western Cape.  

207 murders were reported in the Inanda policing area - that's an increase of 22.5% compared to 2015/2016.

Umlazi SAPS also featured in the top three with 187 reported murders during the previous financial year.

That police station experienced a 20.6% increase when compared to 2015 / 2016. Police stations in KwaMashu's E Section, Plessislaer, Mpumalanga township and Ntuzuma also made the list. 

Overall, there were 4 014 murders reported in KZN last year - an increase of 2.2%. 


The second deadliest province behind Gauteng. 

19 016 people were murdered across the country last year an increase of 343 cases or 1.8%. 

Meanwhile, there were 8484 sexual offences reported in KZN - down 5.2%. 7 032 rapes were reported in the province - also down 3.8%. 

More than 41 000 homes were burgled in KZN in the last financial year with 4255 house robberies reported. 

Carjackings in KZN increased by 21.5% to 3 029.


Meanwhile, Malusi Gigaba will present his first mini-budget today as Finance Minister.  

Government debt, corruption, cash-strapped state-owned entities, education and the drought are expected to feature strongly in his report.
