Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The suspension of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Mmamonnye Ngobeni, comes into effect today.
The police commissioner was handed a letter of suspension over her suspected links with a controversial Durban businessman.
Thoshan Panday reportedly paid nearly R20 000 for Ngobeni's husband's birthday party in 2010.

Panday had been the centre of a fraud investigation at the time.
The DA's welcomed her suspension.
Zakhele Mbhele says they'll be writing to the Acting National Police Commissioner Kgomotso Phahlane on the matter.
''We would like him to make public and make clear the time frames for the initiation and conclusion of that investigation to enquire into the allegations.
''We have always said that when there are these kind of charges or allegations against senior management in the SAPS it should be expedited so it can be finalised and we can have findings within 30 days so these matters don't drag on,'' he said.
