KZN parties lay charges against racist Durbanites

The ANC and the DA have both opened cases against two KZN residents. Dawie Kriel and Will Mac Gibbon made racist comments on social media about the Hindu community during the Diwali celebrations at the weekend.

In some of the posts, Hindus were called idol worshippers and told to go back to India. This sparked outrage.

Speaking at the Durban Central police station, the ANC's Super Zuma said they'll be following the matter with keen interest as they did with the Penny Sparrow case.

"The ANC is a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous organisation. So we think it's something that we will have to fight side-by-side with our communities in dealing with the issue of racism, because we think it's not assisting in building the country that we are trying to build as the ANC," he said.

Zuma says they want the matter to go to the Equality Court.

The DA opened a case at the Brighton Beach Police Station in the Bluff this morning against Kriel.

The party's Zwakele Mncwango says racism has become a cancer that needs to be dealt with.

"It actually shows and undermines the dignity of South Africans and we stress it's important, as a party, to open a case against this individual and we believe the police will fully investigate this matter," he said.

Kriel has said his comments were taken out of context - adding he didn't mean to generalise.
