KZN N2 upgrade to restart next year: Sanral

Road agency Sanral is urging road users who travel on the N2 between Ballito and KwaDukuza on the north coast to be patient.

Sanral says it is hoping to restart construction to upgrade the national route next year.

The agency's Ridhwaan Mahomed has explained why the roadworks were put on hold four years ago.

He says the delays were due to a number of challenges.

Aside from sub-contracting issues and waiting on Treasury for approvals, the company they had been contracted to was liquidated.

Mahomed says they hope to appoint a new contractor soon.

He understands it has been a frustrating time for motorists, with a reduced number of lanes open.

Mahomed says they too want to complete the project.

"All we can do is to plead with motorists to stick to the speed limits, be aware of construction and roadclosures and rive safely," said Mahomed.

"We are hoping to appoint a contractor before the end of this year. Construction works should recommence early next year."
