Asanda Mkhize was last seen by his teacher on 17 May.

He was leaving his Clermont school not far from home.

Asanda's mother Bahle raised the alarm when her son failed to come home.

"Everyday I take him to school, sometimes I fetch him sometimes he comes back. He usualy comes back at 2pm, but that day it was quarter past two and I went for him and I didn't see him on the road. There were no kids on the road.

A massive search was launched for the child, who had just celebrated his sixth birthday.

Mkhize says police came to her house and took her to the mortuary on Tuesday. They had  pulled Asanda's body from the water at Umhlanga's Bronze Beach last week.

She says her mother went in to identify her little boy.

"We are not okay, it is very painful the way we found him. He's the only child. I'm not okay.

“I can't believe he's gone.”

Asanda will be laid to rest on Saturday.
