Motshekga announced that the class of 2022 secured an overall 80.1% pass rate at an event in Randburg last night on Thursday evening.

“The provinces with the highest improvements in their performances are KwaZulu-Natal with 6.2%; Limpopo with 5.3%; and the Eastern Cape with 4.2%.  Again, the great work done in these three most rural provinces, must be applauded,” Motshekga said.

She said 38% of the total number of pupils who wrote the exams achieved a Bachelors pass.

The Free State is the leading province with a pass rate of 88.5%.

Gauteng came in second at 84%, with KZN in third place.

It is also noteworthy that the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo were also able to produce a combined total of 95 393 Diploma passes; which is equivalent to 49.3% of the total Diploma passes nationally; and an improvement of 8.3% from the 2021 total passes with Diploma,” the minister said.

“Therefore, this kind of consistent and improved performance by our three most rural provinces, dispels the myth that quality education, is a character of urban provinces.”

Two districts in KZN made it into the country's top 10.

Ugu is the leading district in the province and is ranked 8th nationally.

Motshekga lauded the class of 2022 for delivering good results despite being faced with some of the worst challenges, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and load shedding.
