The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department says it has tried to reduce the financial costs incurred as a result of the relocation of matric markers from a marking centre in Ulundi in northern KZN to Durban.

452 markers and 70 administrative staff had to be transferred from James Nxumalo Agricultural High School to George Campbell in Durban after water cuts in the area made conditions unhygienic.

The Department's Enoch Nzama says they have tried to cut costs with security and the new marking venue as it is a government owned building however accommodation, meals and transport around the city have to be taken into account.

''We've decided to move our security from James Nxumalo to Durban, we've also moved our catering company and also transportation for our markers, from their accommodation to the marking centres has also been sorted out.

''The costs have, as a result, incurred in terms of hotel accommodation, which I think is a major problem because we are accommodating over 500 officials in the hotels,'' he said.

To make up for lost time, the department says the markers have extended their working hours from 5pm to 6:30pm for the remainder of the marking period which ends on Saturday.
