A man in northern KwaZulu-Natal has begun serving a life sentence for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend.

Mandla Msweli was found guilty of trying to kill the mother of his child in June 2024.
The trial heard Msweli phoned the woman and asked her to meet him in Hluhluwe.
He then shot her in the chest in full view of her sister who had accompanied her.
She was rushed to hospital and Msweli was later arrested.

The KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority's Natasha Kara says the medical reports confirming life-threatening injuries, and the ballistic report linking Msweli to the shooting led to his conviction.
"The Mtubatuba Regional Court sentenced Mandla Msweli to life and 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm"
The NPA has welcomed the sentence saying it is committed to fighting gender-based violence.
