In 2019, Stembiso Zondo was suspected of being copper cable thief.

Police went to search his home in Shongweni, west of Durban after receiving a tip-off.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Thenjisiwe Ngcobo says an officer recovered stolen cables, but also came across a suspicious-looking blanket.

"As he was searching, he saw a blanket and decided to pull it up. As he was pulling the blanket, he found a bone. He was convinced that it was a human bone."

"The police Search and Rescue Unit was summoned and his suspicions were confirmed when the team removed a skeleton from the pit toilet. Zondo was arrested for possession of stolen property whilst the detectives worked around the clock to determine who the dead person might be."

It was later revealed that the remains were of missing man, Thulile Mkhize, who disappeared in July of that same year.

Zondo was then charged with murder.

He learnt his fate in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The court sentenced him to a further five years for obstructing the course of justice.
