A man accused of the murder of a toddler is due to make his first appearance in a northern KwaZulu-Natal court on Friday morning.

The 33-year-old, who is a relative of the child, allegedly assaulted the 18-month-old at a home in Nquthu on Tuesday.

Authorities say the girl's mother and a neighbour, who tried to stop the man, were also stabbed.

Spokesperson for KZN Social Development Mhlaba Memela says the mother and neighbour are recovering in hospital.

"We find solace that the law enforcement agencies swiftly responded and arrested the man. The man is expected to appear in the Nquthu Magistrate's Court.

"The MEC [Nonhlanhla Khoza] has also dispatched a team of social workers to the Mazibuko family to provide psycho-social support, trauma debriefing and trauma containment."
