The 36-year-old was arrested in 2014, after the girl was found crying and reported that she'd been raped.

"The mother of the child left her with somebody else. The father came and he took the child to his house. He was caught by the members of the community as the child was crying when she was raped," Zwane said.

The man was kept behind bars for the duration of the court case and it emerged that he'd raped his daughter, who was then just five, on three different occasions.

The police's Thulani Zwane says he appeared in the Richards Bay Regional Court this week.

"We are pleased with the sentence handed down. He was sentenced to three life terms," Zwane said.
