KZN man arrested for spreading fake COVID-19 message

A Phoenix man has landed himself in major legal trouble for allegedly spreading a fake message that claimed his ex-girlfriend had contracted COVID-19.

Police say the message, which had been widely circulated on WhatsApp and social media, had also featured a photo of the woman.
It claimed that she and her brother had refused treatment and were a danger to society.

SAPS spokesperson, Vishnu Naidoo says the 30-year-old ex-boyfriend has been arrested.
"When police picked up this information, they approached the lady concerned and it turned out that she is negative."
"She then opened a criminal case of the contravention of Section 11 (5) of the Regulation Act and also a charge of crimen injuria is being investigated. The suspect is in police custody."
He is due to appear in court today.
