It says it's very concerned about the high levels of gun violence.

Four people were shot dead at Samukelisiwe Tavern and Restaurant at Sweetwaters in Pietermaritzburg over the weekend.

Eight people were wounded.

The authority's Bheki Mbanjwa, who visited the outlet on Sunday, says the establishment had a valid liquor licence.

Meanwhile, KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has touched on the issue of security negligence.

"If there was not negligence and there was security in this place nobody would have walking in with a firearm. So there was negligence from the tavern owner.

"With regards to the crime scene, when you about the tampering of the crime scene, the incident happened, shooting took place and people were running around. There would be carriages that fall on the ground and people would stand on it and people would get put and police would secure the place."
