KZN hit by heavy rain and flooding

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning of heavy downpours and flooding in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

It says the rains will lead to localised flooding and reduced visibility along the coast and adjacent interior in parts of the province. 


"Heavy rain leading to localised flooding and reduced visibility is expected over parts of Ilembe and the northern parts of eThewini and over parts of King Cetshwayo and Umkhanyakude," it said. 


There has been a spate of road accidents as heavy rain pounds the province. 


With multiple reports of flooded roads, local authorities are urging motorists to be extra cautious. 


Metro police spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad says paramedics and police have been kept busy throughout the night. 


"We have been inundated with attending calls from last night, and we are not sure how many as yet. but early this morning there has been a lot of crashing and freak accidents," he said.


Sewpersad has advised drivers to keep a safe following distance, switch on headlights and to drop speed.


Meanwhile, Rescue Care spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson says one person was killed in a crash on Edwin Swales in the early hours of this morning.


"Unfortunately, one person has passed away. It was in the early hours of this morning on Edwin Swales before Bluff Road, a vehicle overturned."


"We have transported and treated multiple patients through the night as well as this morning. As we speak now multiple units are on accident scenes in and around the Durban area," he said.
