KZN healthcare workers weigh in on move to level 3 lockdown

As government prepares to ease to level three of the lockdown, healthcare workers - fighting COVID-19 on the frontlines - say the uncertainty over the pandemic's impact is worrying.

Mass screening and testing launched in PMB

The KZN Premier said the province will most likely enter level three at the end of the month.

But a doctor in Maritzburg fears the worst is still to come.

She says there's a backlog in getting results for COVID-19 tests, with some having to wait days.

She says the numbers are inaccurate, "We don't know what's coming, we don't know how exponential the rise of infection cases will be. But we are just going to take it as it comes.

'Hopefully, our plans will be enough to hold the number of cases we eventually have. The turn around time for the tests is making things really difficult so it is overburning the system at the moment," she adds.

A doctor working in Kwadukuza says frontline workers have been dealing with numerous challenges.

"Our leaders are telling us that there are enough beds, there is enough PPE, however on the ground, frontliners are complaining week in and week out that there is not enough.,"  he said.

"Moving into level three is now assisting us to not have a worse outcome from the COVID-19 because lockdown will not stop the spread of the virus. Lockdown was there to buy us time.
