There have been disruptions at some health facilities in eThekwini, uThukela and Umgungundlovu after demonstrations began by striking members of Nehawu this week.

The entrance to Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday was blocked by burning tyres, and non-striking employees were intimidated or removed from their posts.

Management at Emmaus in Winterton had to source lunch and dinner for patients after the hospital's laundry and food service staff members were forced to leave their workstations.

Emergency medical service teams in eThekwini and at King Cetshwayo reported serious challenges when transporting patients to and from healthcare facilities.

The head of the KZN Health Department Dr Sandile Tshabalala says the no work, no pay principle will apply to those taking part in the strike.

“We have been informed by the DPSA that the strike has not been legalised, actually, there has been an interdict in terms of the strike. Therefore, any and everyone who is participating will have to face the consequences.”

Nehawu's demanding a 10% wage increase for its members while government is offering a 4.7% increase.

Provincial leader Ayanda Zulu's vowed to continue with their labour action.

They have applied to appeal the Labour Court interdict.

"Government paid workers 3% unilaterally, therefore we are demanding that government must pay our outstanding 7%. We are also demanding R2 500 for our housing allowance which is currently around R1 500."
