KZN Health says Addington Hospital's oncology services restored
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The KwaZulu-Natal Health Department says it hopes staff at Durban's Addington Hospital will be able to attend to around 150 cancer patients a month.
The department says that is thanks to two treatment machines, one of which will be up and running soon.
The department announced yesterday that oncology services at the once crisis-hit facility were now fully restored.
A broken machine is been fixed and a brand new one i on the way.
A full-time oncologist has been employed at the hospital along with two other specialists.
KwaZulu-Natal Health's Acting HOD, Musa Gumede says a group in Gauteng will be responsible for maintaining the machines.
"Once the new machine is up and running it obviously has a warranty period. The service level agreement kicks in after the warranty period has lapsed. With the one that is repaired, the service level agreement kicks in as we start work. So both will be fully covered," Gumede said.
Gumede says the machines will be taken care off.
"We had to make sure that the roof is sealed properly - to prevent the leaks in the roof. When there's corrosion in the building from the water coming in - it then affects the machines. It was not about the machines but about the building itself - making sure that the inclement weather doesn't affect the machine," he said.
