KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo has paid tribute to world-renowned cardiologist, Bongani Mayosi.
Dhlomo has described the late Professor Mayosi as a loving, compassionate man.
51-year-old Mayosi took his own life last week, sparking a national conversation on depression and suicide.
At the time of his death, Mayosi was the Dean of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town. But it was here, in KwaZulu-Natal, that he started his prolific career.
He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine from UKZN in 1989.
The university hosted a memorial service for Mayosi this week.
Dhlomo says he knew Mayosi personally and says the academic was a source of support when he was arrested for terrorism during apartheid.
"He was actually a very spiritual person, he was embedded in his Christianity," said Dhlomo.
"I knew him personally. He gave support to my wife when I went to prison and he also supported us when we were on trial in 1986. That is how I would remember him and his compassion and love towards all of us."
