KZN govt vows support to storm-damaged uMkhanyakude
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The devastating
damage of the recent storms that lashed parts of KZN has been laid bare by the
local government.
Five people, including a one-year-old baby, lost their lives when heavy rains and a hailstorm battered uMkhanyakude, on the north coast.
More than 120 homes were damaged, while around 40 households were demolished. Roads and power lines were also affected.
Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, who assessed the storm damage on Monday, said they'd be providing support to the families in Mtubatuba.
"We are going to support those with burials and other resources that families asked for."
Several schools were also hit.
As the Class of 2023 prepares to sit for their NSC papers next week, Dube-Ncube said they are working to make sure there aren't any interferences.

"We've asked the Department of Public Works to work with us to ensure that we immediately attend to the schools because we do not want learners to be disturbed, especially as they prepare for exams, and we know that the primary classes must write so that they can make space for matric exams to continue."
The premier says they're busy sourcing funds to begin repairs.
"In the meantime, we are asking various departments to approve so we can deviate and use some of the resources available to make the immediate interventions."
