The MEC made an unannounced visit to the district hospital over the long weekend, where he was shocked to find some patients - including women and children - sleeping on the floor.

Others diagnosed with cancer waited long hours before they were transferred to other hospitals for treatment.

"We are not surprised that he would be shocked. This is the state that our members work under on a day-to-day basis. The Department of Health in KZN is on its knees so what he saw there is a direct reflection of the state of health in that province. It starts with him,"  Hospersa's Kevin Halama said.

Health MEC, Sbongiseni Dhlomo has ordered management to take better care of its patients and to notify his department if it's unable to do so.

Halama says the health facility has been dealing with a shortage of staff and healthcare workers for some time now.

"We are to consider the occupational health and safety of the members - they work in very poor conditions, in buildings that are depleted. There are broken ceilings and open rooftops. These are some of the concerns brought to our attention everyday. There was a ministerial task team sent to KZN where it was identified that there needs to be serious action - that needs to be done on the MEC's side," he said.
