MEC Siboniso Duma says they have fielded numerous complaints about unreasonable price hikes.

"So, we will make unannounced visits and raids as part of efforts and protect consumers against food price hikes. Will have no mercy against retailers or companies that sell much-needed food and other products at inflated prices."

"We wish to warn retailers of the consequence and non-compliance with the Consumer Protection Act."

Speaking at a media briefing in Durban on Wednesday, Duma said the department will zoom in on companies violating the rights of consumers.

Duma says there's been an increase in the number of shops, including spaza outlets, selling expired or counterfeit food products in townships and rural areas.

"We wish to warn all unscrupulous criminal syndicates that, as from today, we will be dealing a permanent blow of any crime that is crippling our economy.

"Selling of counterfeit products is crippling our economy, as illegal sellers do not pay tax, as you know."
