KZN govt pledges millions in rural development project

The KZN provincial government says it will inject R100 million into a programme geared towards uplifting women in rural communities.

The Planting Season Project - spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development hopes to create nearly 500 jobs and feed more than 10 000 people.
The provincial Cabinet says 60 percent of the beneficiaries will be women.

Agriculture says seeds, fertilizer and machinery will be distributed. Mandla Msomi speaks for the KZN provincial government.
"The department has undertaken a very thorough assessment of the specific areas where such assistance is going to be given in terms of fees, ploughing mechanisms. There's also the aspect of over 60% of people who are going to benefit are women in rural areas,"Msomi said.
