KZN gets first specialised eye hospital
Durban has become home to the first eye hospital in the province.
KZN Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo and Premier Senzo Mchunu officially opened the McCord Provincial Eye Hospital today.
McCord Hospital was handed over to the KZN Department of Health last year - after the medical facility experienced financial difficulties.
Dhlomo says over R20 million was pumped into the hospital for renovations.
He says the department has taken over all staff and a number of services are now offered at the new facility.
''We will have nurses who are trained and there's also a training centre for Ophthalmic nurses.
''We are going into partnership with the UKZN Optometry [unit] and we're going to provide outreach eye-care service and support to the far-flung district hospitals so that patients have access to excellent eye care,'' he said.
