This left many of its seven million customers in KwaZulu-Natal without a network connection during the darkest hour of need.

Executive for Corporate Affairs Jacqui O'Sullivan says some fibre repairs have been difficult to implement, especially in areas hardest hit by the floods.

"MTN's efforts to restore the impacted sites in KwaZulu-Natal are progressing well. The technicians have been on the ground all day and all night, we have been able to recover a number of sites in Umlazi and Amanzimtoti.

"The focus is really around Scottburgh and the south coast region at the moment. We have recovered 278 sites, but access to sites and the intermittent rain is still making the recovery challenging, but things are certainly improving.

"MTN is currently issuing free SMS bundles for 50 SMSs valid for three days.

"That's being issued to our over seven million customers in KwaZulu-Natal because we know the most critical thing right now is for people to be able to keep in touch with friends and family to make sure that everyone is safe and well."
